Good to know
- Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out. Direct deposit is free.
- Frequently canceling sales can cost 5% of the item price, up to $25.
How Mercari fees work
Mercari charges sellers one fee: 10% of the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. It does not charge on sales tax, and on new or updated listings there is no separate payment processing fee. Listing is free.
Because shipping paid by the buyer is part of the base, the fee is the same whether you raise the price or charge for the label. A $50 item with $5 of buyer-paid shipping costs $5.50. If you offer free shipping instead, you pay 10% on the item alone, and the label comes out of your own pocket, so enter it as your shipping cost above.
Buyers also pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on the same amount. It is shown to them at checkout and is not deducted from what you earn, though it does make your item a little more expensive than the price you set. On that $55 order the buyer pays another $1.98.
A couple of smaller costs can come up after the sale. Direct deposit is free, but Instant Pay costs $3 each time you cash out, and a failed deposit costs $2. Sellers who cancel often can be charged 5% of the item price, up to $25. Mercari Authenticate is optional and seller-paid when you use it.
Shipping is where Mercari margins are won and lost. Label prices depend on weight and carrier, and they change, so check the current price on the listing form rather than assuming. The shipping estimator on this site gives you a starting range for USPS.
A worked example
Say you sell an item you paid $10.00 for at $50.00, with free shipping to the buyer and 7% sales tax, you pay $8.00 for the label. On Mercari that comes to Mercari seller fee $5.00, $5.00 in total. You keep $27.00, a 54% margin.
